Michael Meylac discovered his love of ballet while growing up in Leningrad, as St Petersburg then was. From 1983 to1987 he was imprisoned by the Soviet authorities for possessing banned literature. He has two doctorates in Romance and Slavic philology, and now teaches at the University of Strasbourg; his translations into Russian include The Troubadour Biographies and short stories and novels by Nabokov. His latest book is a collection of interviews about the ballet companies which emerged from the Ballets Russes, including a conversation with the great ballerina Alexandra Danilova.
